Each April, the Sinhala and Tamil people celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year Festival. The Muslim community celebrates Ramadan annually. The Esala Peraherais a grand Buddhist festival. The Perahera or procession features grand and elegant dances and richly decorated elephants. There are fire-dances, whip-dances, Kandyan dances and various other cultural dances. The elephants are usually adorned with lavish garments. Fairs are held periodically in Colombo.
