Relying on the geological advantage, the park commands an excellent view of Qingdao City although the hill is only 60 meters (197 feet) high. The No.1 Bathing Beach is situated on Huiquan Bay in Qingdao. Also called Huiquan Bathing Beach, it is noted for its clear water, mild waves and soft sand. Badaguan, which is a collection of large villas, built in the architectural style of numerous countries (though there are more than 200 villas that make up Badaguan, they represent only 24 internationally recognized architectural styles), came into being during the period when Qingdao was part of the German Concession of 1898. The architectural styles of all of the European countries are represented here, as well as those of North America, Japan and Russia and numerous other countries, prompting Badaguan’s nickname “The Architectural Museum of a Hundred Nations”. Qingdao’s May Fourth Square got its name in memory of the May 4th Movement, which was sparked by Article 156 of the Treaty of Versailles which transferred German concessions in Shandong including Qingdao to Japan rather than returning sovereign authority to China.
